Mental illnesses are health conditions that involve changes in emotion, thinking or behavior—or a combination of these.

A mental illness can negatively affect how we feel, how we see ourselves, or our ability to do our work and enjoy time with others. Mental illnesses take many forms. Sometimes we have problems with anxiety, depression, or anger, that can make it difficult for us to enjoy ourselves or complete our work. Other mental health conditions are so severe that a person may need care in a hospital. This is called serious mental illness.

Sometimes mental illness comes on very suddenly, and a person may wish to hurt themselves or another person. If this happens to you or someone you know, call 911. Help is available.
